I once asked my sister which was her favorite season. I thought her answer was brilliant! She said her favorite season is the beginning of each one of them. Isn’t that the way it is? We look forward to days to come to only look forward to more days to come. Hmm. I’m thinking now I should be appreciating Winter instead of looking forward to Spring.

Key Points To Consider:

• ​​Magic White is on the canvas and has been oxidizing for a while as Lowell painted other flowers.
• Alexander Violet and Alexander Permanent Red mixed together, make a nice lilac color.
• Lowell uses three different brushes; Large and Small Sable Brush and Script Liner Brush.
• He takes his time to thoroughly load the paint into his brush. This is very important as he wants the color mixed well.
• Lowell works the first layer deep into the canvas. Notice how many times he goes over the same spots. He wants this paint to be a thin coat and to be deep in the canvas so he can paint on top of the base color.
• He starts in the lightest area to make sure the brightest flowers appear where the light is hitting the cluster.
• When he adds the flowers in the lighted area he reloads his brush after each flower. When he moves to the shadow area he doesn’t reload.
• When he needs to reload he always begins again in the lighted area until the brush is polluted and then he moves to the shaded area.
• He thins the paint for the centers by dipping his Script Liner brush into Magic White. He adds a touch of Yellow Ochre to the White to get the value he wants for the center.
• All he does is lightly touch the center of some flowers. He only features some of the highlighted flowers by adding centers. Too many would overwhelm the painting.
