How To Define A Forest
Today’s Video Tip shows us how to make a forest look realistic. There are several lessons to learn in this short clip by Bill.
Key Points To Consider:
- Bill’s canvas is wet
- He already added the dark and medium values on the canvas.
- Bill doesn’t clean his brush as he wants the medium value to mix with the highlights.
- He first mixes his paint with Alexander Titanium White and Alexander Cadmium Yellow but the paint is too thick to stick to his canvas.
- He thins his paint with Magic White® so the thin paint will stick to the thick paint that is already on his canvas.
- Bill uses the same color of paint as he moves around the canvas. He does this so he doesn’t have to keep washing his brush.
- Remember, we no longer wash our brushes with Thinner.
- He strategically places the lighter color trees on his canvas. He makes sure to allow the darker colors to show through to separate the trees.
- Notice that as he adds lights to the darkest area the trees pop more.
- He adds the brightest color to the tops of the trees and lets the colors go darker as he moves down to the base of the trees. The brush is picking up the dark color as he touches the canvas this gives another value.
- Bill uses a very soft touch. Because his paint is so thin if he were to press hard, there would be blobs of paint rather than a beautiful tree.
- He doesn’t stay in one place very long and he varies the shapes of the trees.
Happy Painting!
