Today I think we all need Bill Alexander’s positive message.
Don’t be afraid to paint boldly is the theme as we start a new project featuring Bill Alexander. Did you know that when Bill filmed his shows for PBS he didn’t paint from a model? He painted what he saw in his mind. Even when he started his show, he wasn’t exactly sure what his finished painting would look like. He had a general idea but truly painted and created in the moment.
Often Bill talked about being next to God. He did this with full respect for God. He gave credit for the creative power he received from God and remained humble all of his days. I had the opportunity to work with him for many years and Bill was always humble and grateful for what he had.
When Bill would say, “you are the leader of light. You decide where light goes and then it is there.” He meant that we have the ability to create on the canvas any world we want to see. He took great inspiration from Mother Nature. He loved to be outdoors and often times would study nature. He felt that was a benefit for knowing how to paint on canvas.
Points To Consider:
- Bill puts the Magic White on differently in this video.
- Being about to paint abstractly comes from experience.
- The background is thinly painted so he can add the thick colors on top.
- The background strokes are random until he adds the color to the table. To paint something flat, use horizontal strokes.
- Bill is always conscientious of where the light is coming from.
Happy Painting!
