Bill shows you how NOT to do it!
Today is a short but powerful message from Bill. He is preparing his background for a landscape he has chosen to paint. He knows he wants the darkest mood to be in the center of the canvas. He also knows he wants the dark to fade into the light. So he blends the black medium into the Magic White®. The problem he runs into is that he has way too much medium on his canvas. He talks about the thick paint sticking to a thinner paint and the thinner paint sticking to thicker paint. So what happens?
Points To Consider:
- He didn’t put Magic White on the canvas where he placed the Black Medium.
- He is swimming in Medium!
- Bill knows he will be in trouble if he continues without correcting the problem.
- There are a few ways to fix the problem. One, remove the paint from the canvas with a paper towel. Two, which Bill tried, was to clean out the brush and dry it and then go onto the canvas and lift up extra paint. Three, add thicker paint into what is already there.
- Bill did a combination of the last two. If he had more time he probably would have wiped some of the paint off.
- He chooses to add the thick, dry paint onto the canvas. the thick, dry paint absorbed some of the oil.
- It is absolutely necessary to get the first layer on right. If you don’t, the painting process will be stressful.
