Buck will continue to teach form by adding highlight and shadow to the handle of the jugs.
Points To Consider:
- Buck is painting on a dry canvas.
- He starts with the darkest darks. (Alizarin Crimson and Burnt Umber.)
- Buck paints this quickly because he has little time, but suggests you take your time to keep the form of the handles.
- Buck always wipes his brush after loading paint onto his brush. Just slightly but enough that he goes to the canvas with not a blob of paint. (I asked him once why he does that and he said, “Because my teacher did it!). Reason enough!
- Buck blends the neck area of the jug to maintain the roundness. The handles are not blended because he wants those to appear sharp.
- Buck builds the highlights by adding a little more light with each layer.
- When he blends he touches the canvas lightly because he wants to keep the integrity of the color.
Buck has taught thousands of people to paint and many times his students started with the painting called “Jug and Oranges.” We filmed that project for PBS years ago. Unfortunately, Buck had to complete the painting in 27 minutes!
There are so many valuable lessons for learning to paint in this project. We think the lessons are important enough that we refilmed this project. This time Buck had all the time he wanted so he could explain in more detail every single step.
Happy Painting!
