How we developed this program.

When I started painting over two years ago I was the proverbial "lost ball in tall grass."

I had no clue where to start.

I knew I wanted to paint, but when I went to the big online art supply stores the sheer volume of materials was overwhelming. Who knew you needed so many different colors of paint?

When I went to look for lessons, oh boy did I find them. 1.5 Million on YouTube alone. I settled on one guy who was a disaster. Not only was he a lousy painter, he was even worse as a teacher.

Then I found a guy who I thought created beautiful paintings...just like what I wanted to paint. Unfortunately, he just wasn't much of a teacher.

Then I stumbled onto Bill Alexander. I had never heard of him before but as soon as I saw his artwork I knew this guy knew how to paint. I found some of his videos on YouTube and started to paint along with him.

And guess what happened?

I was actually learning to paint! This guy knew how to teach as well as paint. (I've come to realize over the last two years that it is very rare to find both a master artist who is also a master teacher.)

Eventually, I became part of the Alexander Art team and, with my partner Laurie, swore that no one else would ever have to suffer the overwhelm, disappointment and failure I experienced when I started painting. We wanted to create a new way to teach art to millions of aspiring artists, just like Bill did on television over thirty years ago.

Over the past six months or so we've been working to build the Alexander Art website to be not only a memorial to Bill's work but also to become one of the best art resources on the Internet.

We wanted to take the hundreds of teaching videos that Bill and the artists associated with him for over twenty years on his Emmy award winning PBS television show, "The Magic of Oil Painting" and create something unique and special for aspiring artists.

Why ten minutes?

How can you learn in only ten minutes?

After we shot this video clip we began to start thinking. If we could break down a painting into simple lessons students could set aside as little as ten minutes a day. Rather than trying to finish a painting in one or two sessions, they could take weeks.

You see it takes a long time for an oil painting to dry. As Tom says in the video clip, you can take days (or, really, even weeks) between painting sessions without worrying that your painting will be too dry to work on.

Even if your painting is completely dry, which, as we said, would take months, you can still work on it by using a special process called "oiling out." (If you get into that situation, we'll tell you how to do it.)

Do I need to be able to draw?

Absolutely not.

In fact, many beginning painters learn drawing skills after they learn to paint. We've even included templates with each painting so, if you want, you can draw outlines of each painting directly on your canvas.

Can I really paint like a master?

Of course, you can. Bill Alexander was a master artist who painted for over forty years before he became famous on television in the 1980's. He went on to paint for another twenty years after that.

In addition, Bill taught students for over twenty years before he started his television show. He taught tens of thousands of students over his career before television and then millions more when his show aired.

So, yes, you can paint like a master because Bill shows you exactly how to do it. In as little as a few short months, you could be painting well enough to give very special gifts to your family and friends. You could even begin to start selling some of your artwork.
